Becoming a Certified Financial Coach is about coaching people towards financial dignity and independence. A Certified Financial Coach is not only a highly skilled coach with enhanced training, they are also trained to be financially savvy and given tools to help people change their relationship to their finances, wealth and money.
To accomplish this you will need to be or become skilled in ontological coaching as well as complete the CFC-CoachPLUS training program. There are four learning tracks to become a Certified Financial Coach depending on your current expertise in ontological coaching.
TRACK 1 - You are already an ontologically trained coach having graduated from one of these three premiere, ICF and CFC-Board approved coaching schools: Newfield Network, New Ventures West, Gerogetown University Coaching Program, or the Academy for Coaching Excellence.
To be eligible to become a Certified Financial Coach, you must attend the CFC-CoachPLUS training program and successfully complete all coursework. (See a full schedule of CFC-CoachPLUS training programs, events, and informational telecalls.)
The cost of the CoachPLUS Training is $7,999, however special discounts are available for early registration and additional discounts may apply because you have attended the approved coaching schools listed above. There is an additional fee of $350 to apply to receive your certification upon successful completion of the coursework.

TRACK 3 – You have some coach training or graduated from a non-ICF accredited school or you are a helping professional (such as MSW, psychologist, psychiatrist). There are two requirements for this track:
- As part of the acceptance process into the CFC-CoachPLUS program, you will be asked to provide additional information about your experience that qualifes you for this program. You will also be asked to participate in a selection committee interview to discuss the CFC-CoachPLUS learning experience and how you would intregrate financial coaching into your current practice.
- To be eligible to become a Certified Financial Coach, you must attend the CFC-CoachPLUS training program and successfully complete all coursework. (See a full schedule of CFC-CoachPLUS training programs, events, and informational telecalls.)

TRACK 4 – You have no coaching background but want to become a Certified Financial Coach. The training you will recieve depends on the type of CFC-Professional designation you are seeking. Non-financial professionals should seek the CFC-I designation. Financial Professionals with long-term experience and licensing (call our CFC-Services office for requirements) may apply for the special CFC-R license. Both CFC-I and CFC-R licensees are considered CFC-Professionals -- the difference is in the ability of the CFC-R to work as a professional financial advisor in addition to becoming a financial coach.
Financial professionals and other individuals who have helped or want to help others in a financial capacity find interest in taking the CFC-CoachPLUS program. It is important to realize that just because you have a financial background or believe you are capable of working with people around monetary issues does not necessarily mean you are the type of person who can become a Certified Financial Coach. Becoming a CFC-Pro requires the ability to coach, not advise.
NOTE: Applicants without coach training hours or coaching background are held to the same high standards of coaching excellence as coaches who have training and experience. The pass rate of individuals who do not have coach training or experience prior to attending the CFC-CoachPLUS training is approximately 60%. All candidates for CFC-professional licensing must demonstrate ICF standard competencies during an oral exam following completion of CFC-CoachPLUS training to receive their license.
CFC-I and CFC-R Candidates who do not pass the oral exam will be presented with a list of competencies which must be met for licensing. The candidate can then choose any one of four paths to upgrade their coaching skills in order to pass the oral exam. These options range from hiring a coach to help them learn additional coaching skills to attending advanced coach training programs (through Newfield or other ICF Accredited providers) which concentrate on the competencies needed.
CFC-I Training for individuals who are interested in becoming a Certified Financial Coach and do not have financial background.

Again, the application process for Track 4 is designed to ensure that only the best candidates become Certified Financial Coaches. What would a candidate look like who would be qualified as one of the best? The emphasis is on the word coach. Being a CFC-Pro is not about advising or telling people what to do – it is about coaching to help the client get at their beliefs, assumptions, world views, values, habits and actions around money to improve their relationship with their finances and wealth.
